Travelling by Rail

Get to the heart of The 146th Open action by train with Merseyrail; Hillside station is just a few minutes’ walk from Royal Birkdale.

If your journey starts within the Liverpool City Region:
Merseyrail will be providing an enhanced rail service for the Championship, supplying a regular service to and from Liverpool as well as the rest of the Merseyrail network which covers Formby, Crosby Ormskirk, Wirral and Chester.

If you’re travelling from further afield:
Merseyrail can provide your link to Royal Birkdale (via Hillside Station on the Southport line) from all mainline stations below.

Here you can use the Merseyrail Destination Merseyside Day Planner for train service updates for the event and ticket information. Detailed train times will be available closer to the time of the championship and you can download the free Merseyrail App for live train times on the day.

Industrial action has been announced on the Merseyrail network on Sunday 23rd July. While details of the travel plan are still being developed, there will be a Merseyrail service in operation to get people to and from Royal Birkdale. Please note that mainline rail services will be unaffected by the strike. We will provide more information in due course.
