Darren Clarke holds a precarious one shot lead as he reaches the turn in the third round of the Championship in level par to remain at four under. He briefly shared the lead with Dustin Johnson, but the American has dropped a shot at the 13th hole and is now alongside Thomas Bjorn and Lucas Glover in second spot.
American Ricky Fowler has jumped through the field into a share of fifth place with a superb two under par 68, largely composed in the worst of the weather. He shares that spot with Anders Hansen of Denmark and Davis Love III of America.
The overnight leaders are gaining a huge benefit from the accurate weather forecast. Right on cue the rain died away and the wind dropped dramatically after they had completed just a few holes. But few are taking advantage of their good fortune.
Clarke birdied the first hole to establish the outright lead, but missed a couple of short ones that would have moved him well clear before dropping back to four under at the eighth. Lucas Glover, his co-leader overnight and his playing partner today, bogeyed the first and remains at three under in company with Thomas Bjorn who has matched two bogeys with two birdies to the turn.
