The Open wins Sports Technology Award
The extensive digital content offering at The Open was recognised at a glittering awards ceremony in London today.
The Open won the Best Technology for Fans award at the Sports Technology Awards held at The Brewery in London
Last year’s Open at Royal Liverpool was the most connected ever with a Wi-Fi network covering the entire course.
Fans could access an array of digital content on their handheld devices in the grandstands and Spectator Village. The content included live coverage on the official Open App as well as video highlights and updates from around the course and extensive statistical and scoring information.
More than 700,000 people downloaded the Open App during the Championship and were able to stay up to date with how their favourite players were doing.
Michael Wells, Director - Championship Staging at The R&A, said, “We are delighted to receive this award and it is fitting recognition for the innovative approach we have taken to digital technology at The Open. By helping people to access such a wide range of digital content we have been able to greatly enhance their experience of attending the Championship.
Our intention is to provide an experience equal to television coverage while enjoying the wonderful atmosphere of actually being at The Open. “
The Open also won the Best Use of Event Technology at the UK Event Awards in London last November.
