Ogilvy in position to qualify for Royal Birkdale after flawless 64 in Australia
Adelaide’s Geoff Ogilvy carded a flawless eight-under-par 64 on Saturday to put himself in position for a second Emirates Australian Open title and a 13th appearance at The Open next summer.
Three players who finish in the top 10 and ties who are not already exempt will earn a place in The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale from 16-23 July, 2017. The 101st playing of Australia’s most prestigious championship is the first event in The Open Qualifying Series, which gives players the chance to qualify for golf’s most international major championship at leading Tour events across the globe.
Ogilvy, who holds a two-shot lead at 11-under-par, is one of Australia’s most accomplished players with eight victories on the PGA TOUR including three World Golf Championship titles. He won the US Open ten years ago in 2006 at Winged Foot and is in position to return to The Open where he has enjoyed two top-ten finishes. He will be aiming to lift the historic Stonehaven Cup for a second time on Sunday after first winning his home Open in 2010.
Three players are tied for second place on nine-under-par including world No 5 Jordan Spieth, who is already exempt for The Open and finds himself in a similar position to 2014 when he delivered a closing 63 to win the Emirates Australian Open.
New Zealand’s Ryan Fox is looking to become the first Kiwi to lift the Stonehaven Cup and continued his steady play with a 71 on Saturday to remain firmly in the mix. The 29-year-old is looking for a third consecutive start in golf’s oldest major and had his best Open result in 2015 when he finished tied 45th in St Andrews.
The third qualifying position is held by Aaron Baddeley, who added a five-under-par 67 to his total on Saturday to climb the leaderboard. The 35-year-old, who holds both Australian and American citizenship, won the Australian Open as an amateur in 1999 and successfully defended the title as a professional a year later. He has made six starts in The Open and has earned four victories on the PGA TOUR.
