Three places up for grabs at The Open in Joburg
The Joburg Open is the second event in the 2018 Open Qualifying Series where three places in The 147th Open at Carnoustie are available.
The leading three players who finish in the top ten and ties at the Joburg Open who are not already exempt will earn places in the starting field when golf’s most international major championship returns to the renowned Angus links.
The event is sanctioned by the Sunshine Tour, Asian Tour and European Tour and moves to a new venue this week when it will be played at Randpark Golf Club in Johannesburg.
Following his victory at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open last week, Dylan Frittelli leads the home challenge as the largest field of the season compete for the title. The South African sits second in the Race to Dubai and is the only player currently exempt for The Open at Carnoustie in the field of 240 .
Darren Fichardt will seek to defend the title he won in February – a feat achieved by Charl Schwartzel in 2010 and 2011. By winning the event earlier in the year he also earned a place in The Open at Royal Birkdale
The previous Joburg Open was reduced to 54-holes due to thunderstorms and this week’s event could face similar issues if the latestforecasts are anything to go by.
2010 Champion Golfer of the Year Louis Oosthuizen had to withdraw from the event on Wednesday morning, due to a freak injury suffered on Monday. The world number 23 jammed his finger in a luggage trolley at the airport.
