Regional Qualifying Feature - Minchinhampton Golf Club
Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds, the historic Minchinhampton Golf Club offers beauty and brilliance when it hosts one of the Regional Qualifying events for The 147th Open.
Minchinhampton has three courses with the Old Course, founded in 1889, but it is holes from both The Avening and The Cherington courses will make up the course that will host Regional Qualifying for the first time since 2007.
The layout consists of holes 1, 2 & 18 of the Cherington Course and holes 1-3, 7-18 of the Avening Course. This composite layout reforms the original layout, which is referred to as the Avening Championship Course.
General Manager Simon Pope could not contain his excitement at welcoming back Regional Qualifying for The Open and believes securing this opportunity is a real feather in the cap for Minchinhampton.
“It’s Open Qualifying and for me The Open is the best competition in the world. There has been a real buzz about the place since the announcement” he said. “It’s a badge of honour and it puts us back on the map” he added.
“By hosting The Open Regional Qualifying it puts us back in the minds of golfers nationally and internationally because The Open is such a massive event. Hosting The R&A and Open Qualifying is the best honour we could ask for.”
The club’s Cherington course hosted Regional Qualifying from 2002-2007 and the club was keen to get the event back at Minchinhampton for the first time in over a decade. Having not just one but two Regional Qualifying courses at his disposal is an exciting proposition for the club which has called upon Courses Manager Paul Worster for his knowledge on the exciting event. He said: “Our Golf Courses Manager was here when we last hosted Regional Qualifying so I’ve confidence that we will deliver.”
“I know he nailed it previously and as soon as I told him we were doing it again, he was absolutely delighted and full of pride. Whenever we host an event where we’re bringing people to Minchinhampton, the greenkeepers are hugely motivated and it gives them that focus to want every detail to be as good as it can be.”
“We do encourage visitors and when people come along we can now tell them we have two Open Regional Qualifying courses – that’s a strong statement.”
Minchinhampton is one of the oldest clubs in the West of England. The General Manager revealed golfers will fall in love with the course and the test it will offer this summer: “The fact that we’re on the Cotswolds means we have a huge draw – we have a lot of Americans come over who love to see it.”
