The Open Radio has got you covered at Carnoustie
Whether it be the first Icelandic man to compete at a major or a former Ryder Cup player dropping to number 1983 in the world and coming through Final Qualifying, The Open is always packed with fascinating stories.
And if you want to stay up-to-date with all those tales, as well as latest news and live commentary from Carnoustie, then make sure you listen to Richard Kaufman and team on The Open Radio all week.
The world’s best are taking on the famous old links and from the clubhouse leaders to players with captivating back-stories, The Open Radio covers it all.
As much as he enjoys hearing from Jordan Spieth just after he’s lifted the Claret Jug, presenter Kaufman admits it’s the lesser-known yarns that he loves bringing to listeners.
“Obviously you’ve got the best players in the world at The Open and it’s brilliant to have them all congregate in the UK for this special event,” said Kaufman, who covered his first Open for network radio in 1996.
“But what I love about it is the players who come through that maybe fans aren’t quite so familiar with.
“For example, on Tuesday we chatted to Haraldur Magnus – who will be the first Icelandic man to compete at a major this week – and it was great to hear about this adventure for him.
“As someone ranked outside the top 1000, he was talking about being on the driving range next to guys who have won major championships and he sounded almost overawed by it all.
“It’s those kind of stories that excite me. So on top of hearing all the main guys from the press conferences, we’re there to bring a flavour of the whole field – all 156 players.”
The Open Radio’s preview coverage began on Tuesday and continues today with the team speaking to players, coaches, officials and spectators as we build up to the first shot of The 147th Open at 6.35am local time.
Then, as the live action gets underway, full uninterrupted commentary will start from 7.00am on Thursday and Friday and 9.00am on Saturday and Sunday until the close of play.
Former European and PGA Tour players Paul Eales, Gordon Brand Jnr, Carl Paulson and Raymond Burns will join Matt Adams, Ron Jones, Sue Thearle and Alison Walker in the commentary box and out on the course, with Kaufman holding it all together from the booth.
And the presenter has stuck his neck out to predict one player in particular who he thinks might go well this week.
“I think there’s 40 or 50 players who could potentially win it this week but if I had to pick someone, and I don’t like to go for an obvious name, I’m very interested to see how Adam Scott gets on,” added Kaufman.
“He’s under the radar, he hasn’t been the best of form but there are signs the game is coming back. I know he spent three weeks here preparing for this Open, he’s managed to persuade Fanny Sunesson out of retirement, who obviously caddied for Nick Faldo when he won a couple of Opens, as well,
“I like those stories and he’s been so close to lifting the Claret Jug before, so I think he could be a long shot that goes well.”
