Became Austria’s first Ryder Cup player last September, taking the fourth and final automatic qualifying spot on the European points list.

Out for seven months with a wrist injury in 2018 and dropped to 389th in the world from 23rd in 2015, but his comeback started in earnest with a one-stroke victory over Robert MacIntyre at the 2019 Made in Denmark tournament.

He followed that with a joint runner-up finish at the Irish Open, where three Royal Portrush places were on offer as part of The Open Qualifying Series. And then another win at ASI Scottish Open after a three-hole play-off with Benjamin Hebert, having scored a Renaissance course record 61 in the second round.

By adding the Italian Open that October he headed the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai until the final week saw him slip to third.

His first two victories came in 2012 at the Ballantine’s Championship in South Korea and on home turf at the Lyoness Open, and more success came at the 2015 French Open and 2017 Shenzhen International after a play-off with Tommy Fleetwood.

Then last May he returned to Denmark to defend his 2019 title and won again by five.
