Frittelli left it late to qualify in 2019 as well, taking the final exempt spot by grabbing his maiden PGA Tour victory at the John Deere Classic with closing rounds of 65 and 64.

He was twice a winner on the DP World Tour in 2017. At the Lyoness Open in Austria, he produced a last day 67 to win by one and later in the year he defeated Arjun Atwal in a play-off for the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

He might also have triumphed at the Turkish Airlines Open but for Justin Rose’s closing birdie.

Frittelli was beaten in sudden death at the 2015 Australian PGA Championship and in 2017 at both the Eye of Africa PGA Championship and Volvo China Open.

The former age group world champion was a team-mate of Jordan Spieth at the University of Texas and sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the final green to give them the college title for the first time in 40 years. Like Spieth, he turned professional in 2012.
