Captured his first DP World Tour title by beating Alexander Levy in a play-off for the 2017 Porsche European Open, sinking a 10-foot birdie putt to force sudden death and winning with another birdie at the second extra hole.

Two weeks later, he played the first major of his career and finished a superb joint ninth in the PGA Championship.

Last season, Smith had runner-up finishes at the Ras al Khaimah Championship and the MyGolfLife Open, where he was in a play-off with Spaniards Pablo Larrazabal and Adri Arnaus, then in October took the Portugal Masters by three with a spectacular 30 under par total which included two rounds of 62 and a closing 63.

Winner of the English amateur stroke play at Formby in 2013, the year in which he also represented Britain and Ireland at the Walker Cup in America. Then topped the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit to earn himself a Challenge Tour card.

Progressed to the main circuit and started 2017 with a third place finish at the BMW South African Open in only his third tournament as a full member. Has reached 69th in the world and last season a career-high 12th on the Tour Rankings.
