A closing 40-foot putt left him level with the New Zealander at Ballyliffin and then, incredibly, he holed from the same distance on the first extra hole.

The withdrawal of defending champion Rory McIlroy gave Florida-based Knox his Open debut at St Andrews in 2015, but it was after JB Holmes pulled out of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai four months later that his career hit new heights.

Ranked 85th in the world at the time, he became the first Scot to capture a World Golf Championships title and was the first debutant to win a WGC tournament since Jeff Maggert took the inaugural event of the series in 1999.

A week later he lost a play-off to Graeme McDowell in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, but his second PGA Tour victory came at the 2016 Travelers Championship and the same season he was runner-up to McIlroy in the Irish Open.
