Last year’s US Open winner struggled on Thursday, labouring to a seven-over 78.

But the 31-year-old really got to grips with Royal Portrush on Friday, racing inside the cut line with an inspired six-under 65 which included four birdies in five holes from 9 to 14.

The Champion Golfer of 2023 produced another Friday masterclass to haul himself into contention for the Claret Jug once more.

When he triumphed at Royal Liverpool two years ago, the Georgia native sank four birdies in his opening five holes in the second round. This time, he lit the touchpaper with birdies at 1 and 2 – and never looked back, producing a bogey-free 65.

Scottie Scheffler

Scheffler came within a single shot of Shane Lowry’s course record following a majestic performance from the world number one.

Having to deal with two afternoon downpours, Scheffler did remarkably well to land eight birdies in typically effortless fashion.

He cruised into the lead on ten-under-par – seven-under for the day – and missed a 15ft putt by millimetres for a record-equalling 63.
