The One Handed Chip Challenge

This year we have launched our latest social challenge titled the #OneHandedChip. The video heroes Rory O’Connor, a young golfer from Northern Ireland who two years ago starred in our #10StepChip challenge. Rory has cerebral palsy, paralysing the right side of his body meaning he plays golf one-handed, but he doesn’t allow that to stop him playing the sport he loves. As The Open returns to his home of Northern Ireland for the first time in nearly 70 years, we thought it would be great to get him involved to show the all-inclusive nature of golf. The challenge is designed for golfers and no golfers and simply requires you to select on object, pace out 10 steps and chip the ball into the object using one hand.

So film your attempt and upload it to Twitter or Instagram using #OneHandedChip and tagging @HSBC_Sport to be in with a chance of winning tickets to The Open in 2020 at Royal St. George's.

Head to HSBC Sport on Twitter to see how to enter. Click here for full T&Cs.

More Details

HSBC Golf Roots

HSBC Golf Roots is The Golf Foundation's national development programme which promotes the sport in schools, helps youngsters into clubs, and uses golf to promote important life skills such as honesty and respect. The initiative’s aim is to make the benefits of golf available to young people and help them to ‘Start, Learn and Stay’ in the sport. The Golf Foundation works with schools, community organisations and clubs by providing adapted equipment, training workshops, resources, grants and support from a network of Regional Development Officers. HSBC has been the title sponsor of this development programme since 2011. For the past two years, the development programme has succeeded in its strategic aim to introduce 500,000 children and young people to the game.

The Golf Foundation's 'Skills for Life' concept has been successfully delivered through community activity in schools, clubs and HSBC Golf Roots Centres in the UK, in a bid to give young people the opportunity to experience the benefits that golf has to offer. The programme's goal is to ensure that over 50,000 young people progress through the doors of a golf club each year and that 15,000 become regular players.

HSBC Golf Zone

The HSBC Golf Zone is a not-to-be missed Open experience. All spectators can visit for free – there are so many activities to participate in and great prizes up for grabs. This year, the HSBC Golf Zone will take spectators on a journey of innovation, highlighting how technology has advanced golf over the years. Starting in the R&A Heritage area, explore how balls, clubs and other golf equipment has evolved over the past 100+ years. Take a tour of the 4-hole ‘Putt the UK’ mini golf course. Find your perfect swing with the golf robot. Select from three historic moments in Open Championship history to see if you can perform better than the pro on the golf simulator. Capture your stroboscopic golf swing photo and practise your chipping skills to light up ‘Dunluce Castle’. These are just some examples of the fun, challenging and new activities available this year for all ages to try. HSBC Ambassadors Tim Henman and Brian O’Driscoll will also be back, making daily visits to the HSBC Golf Zone.
