There was only one Open place up for grabs at Final Qualifying when Estonian amateur Richard Teder stood over a 50-yard pitch at West Lancashire – and sank it in dramatic fashion to end a four-man sudden death play-off.
The epic conclusion to the day’s play ended the hopes of England’s Sam Bairstow and Irishman Ronan Mullarney after they had also finished on five-under-par.
Yet it was not the only heart-stopping moment for the 20-year-old, who had been sailing into The Open until he double-bogeyed the last of the 36 holes.
"It means the world to me,” said Teder. “I just can't wait to get back home and celebrate and just get ready for The Open. I'm playing with all the best players in the world and I like to think I belong there, so it'll be fun."
A quarter-finalist in last month’s Amateur Championship at Royal St George's, Teder won the Latvian Amateur and Estonian stroke play titles last year and then his country’s match play championship this season.
