Plays for the first time since 2016 thanks to a joint third-place finish at the Genesis Scottish Open immediately before the Championship.

The PGA Tour member took the second of three Open Qualifying Series spots on offer because both of the players ahead of him – winner Rory McIlroy and Robert MacIntyre - were already exempt.

Best known for his 2015 victory in the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, where he beat Justin Rose at the third hole of a play-off after they had tied on 15 under par.

He has been involved in two other shoot-outs in America, Brian Gay taking the honours at the 2013 Humana Challenge and Jason Dufner in the 2016 CareerBuilder Challenge.

Lingmerth reached seventh on the World Amateur rankings during his time at the University of Arkansas and on turning professional in 2010 he went through every stage of the PGA Tour qualifying school and earned a place on the second-tier Nationwide Tour.

He reached 35th in the world in 2016, the year he partnered Henrik Stenson on golf’s return to the Olympic Games. He then fell outside the game’s top 1,200 only two years ago, but in August last year he won on the Korn Ferry Tour and this March tied for sixth at the Players Championship.
