Left it as late as possible to join his twin brother Rasmus in the Royal Liverpool line-up, taking the last of the three Open Qualifying Series places up for grabs at the Genesis Scottish Open on Sunday.

He finished the event in joint sixth spot, but three of the players ahead of him and four alongside were already exempt. While Rasmus - a winner on the DP World Tour the previous weekend - is making his debut, Nicolai has already appeared twice.

He played in the 2018 Open at Carnoustie as European Amateur Champion, a title he picked up two weeks after they had finished first and second at the Toyota Junior World Cup in Japan, Rasmus coming out on top that time.

They shared victory again later that year at the Eisenhower Trophy world team championship in Ireland, pipping by one stroke an American line-up which included Collin Morikawa. That was Denmark’s first triumph in the event and now the brothers share more history as the first brothers to win back-to-back DP World Tour events.

Rasmus struck first at the Omega European Masters, then Nicolai lifted the Italian Open in September.

Both have since made it into the world’s top 100 and Nicolai registered his second Tour title at last year’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship in the United Arab Emirates, while in March he was runner-up to Matt Wallace at the PGA Tour’s Corales Puntacala Championship in the Dominican Republic.
