Founded in 1892 and situated just along the coast from Royal St George's and Prince's, Royal Cinque Ports hosted The Open in 1909 and 1920.

The highly regarded links was also set to welcome golf's original Championship on several other occasions. However, the 1938 and 1949 Opens were relocated to Royal St George's due to flooding, and World War II meant there was no Championship in 1942, another year for which Cinque Ports had been selected as host.

The Deal links has previously served as a venue for Final Qualifying, as well as staging The Amateur Championship on three occasions in 1923, 1982 and 2013.

It hosted The R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship in 2021, won by Jack Bigham.

Three-time Open Champion Gary Player was once quoted as saying: “I consider the last four holes at Deal to be, without doubt, the finest four consecutive holes on any course in the world."
