One of England's oldest golf clubs following its founding in 1873, West Lancashire boasts a rich history.
A trio of Open Champions - Harold Hilton, Sandy Herd and Arthur Havers - went on to lift the Claret Jug after being members of staff at the club. Hilton and five-time Open winner James Braid are also among those to have been involved in developing the layout of the course, which adopted its present layout in 1961 under the design of CK Cotton.
A regular host of Open Qualifying events over the years, West Lancashire earned high praise from famed course designer Donald Steel after he made a number of visits to the club in the 1990s.
"Only in Britain can one savour the true flavour of seaside golf, of which West Lancashire is a perfect example," said Steel. "On summer evenings, as the sun casts its shadow on the links, the shipping slips silently by on the Mersey and there is time to reflect on the distant beauty, the realisation occurs that West Lancashire enjoys the best of all worlds."
