Rose headlines 16 qualifiers on day of high drama

Justin Rose acknowledges the crowds at Burnham and Berrow

Justin Rose headlined the 16 players who came through Final Qualifying at four venues across the UK, with 11 players now set to make their Open debuts at Royal Troon.

Listen to how all the drama unfolded on FQ Radio.

Rose, the Silver Medal winner at Royal Birkdale in 1998, carded -8 over his two rounds at Burnham & Berrow to claim one of the four spots on offer at the Somerset venue hosting Final Qualifying for the first time.

He was joined on that score by Dominic Clemons, one of five amateurs to book their spots on Tuesday. Abraham Ancer and Charlie Lindh claimed the final two spots following a play-off, with Anirban Lahiri missing out.

Dundonald Links played host to high drama as Angel Hidalgo sealed his spot in style, holing a 120-yard approach for eagle on the 9th – his final hole – to avoid a play-off.

Sam Hutsby led the way on -8, with Liam Nolan joining Hidalgo on -5 and Jack McDonald prevailing in a play-off to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps by playing at The Open.

No-one has mastered Final Qualifying quite like Matthew Southgate in recent years and the specialist came through the 36-hole marathon for a fifth time at Royal Cinque Ports.

Southgate finished six-under, three clear of nearest challengers Elvis Smylie and Jaime Montoyo, who will both make their Open bows in Ayrshire. Montoyo’s clubmate Luis Masaveu will join him after converting a 20-foot putt to triumph in a play-off and claim the final spot on offer.

Sergio Garcia was the star attraction at West Lancashire but the Spaniard missed out for the second year running, finishing two shots off the qualifiers.

Amateur Matthew Dodd-Berry and Sam Horsfield finished tied at the top on -6, with Daniel Brown and Masahiro Kawamura completing the qualifying line-up a shot back.
