The Clara Jug

Shane Lowry’s emphatic victory at The 148th Open had golf fans across the globe marvelling at one of the finest performances in the Championship’s illustrious history.

While the Irishman’s masterclass at Royal Portrush was met with worldwide acclaim, nowhere were the celebrations quite as joyous as they were in Clara – an Irish town with a population of little over 3,000 people, nestled in County Offaly.

Clara is Lowry’s hometown, and for the people there the sight of their local hero lifting the Claret Jug at golf’s original championship was a truly special moment.

So when Lowry arrived back with the iconic trophy in hand it was truly a sight to behold, with thousands of people lining the streets to greet the homecoming hero.

Six years on, and with The Open’s return to Royal Portrush right around the corner, we’ve been reliving those incredible few days.
