After finishing as the runner-up in the 2022 Corales Puntacana Championship, he repeated the trick at this year's John Deere Classic and reached a career-high ranking of 63rd as a result.

Smalley played the US Open as an amateur in 2017 and also featured in this year's PGA Championship.
