Alistair Docherty’s first professional victory brought with it an exemption for The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale.

The American won the 119 Visa Argentina Open presented by Macro at The Jockey Club in Buenos Aires in March, sealing the triumph with a crucial birdie putt on the 72nd hole.

Docherty ended the week one stroke ahead of Chris Norte and SY Noh to claim his first title on the Korn Ferry Tour, and the one Birkdale qualifying place on offer as part of the Open Qualifying Series (OQS).

He is now poised to make his Open debut when golf’s original championship returns to Southport in July.
