Finished joint top of the 36-hole Final Qualifying competition at Prince's on July 2 to earn himself a third Open start. Two years ago took the first of three Royal Birkdale spots on offer at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open – part of The Open Qualifying Series – but it was not the finish to the event he hoped for.
Needing a par five on the closing hole for his maiden European Tour victory he bogeyed and then lost the play-off to Rafael Cabrera-Bello. The 2013 English amateur champion, who beat Matthew Fitzpatrick in the final that week, also left it late to earn his debut at Royal Troon last year.
A joint ninth place at the French Open was enough to take the third of four spots up for grabs there as six of those ahead of him were already exempt. Was a boxer in his youth – his cousin Miles is a professional – but then concentrated on golf and after winning the national title he earned a Walker Cup cap alongside Fitzpatrick. Had a runner-up finish in only his third start on the Challenge Tour. Has three top 10 finishes on the main circuit so far this season.
