A first-time winner on the DP World Tour last season, the 29-year-old now plays in his maiden major thanks to a closing 20-foot putt in the 36-hole Final Qualifying event at West Lancashire on July 2.

Instead of facing a play-off with Ben Schmidt for the last of the four Royal Troon spots up for grabs – with Sergio Garcia in the group one further back – Brown was rewarded for his patience earlier in the day.

The former English amateur champion’s Tour title came by five strokes at the ISPS Handa World Invitational in Northern Ireland, but he took seven weeks off earlier this year because of a knee problem.

“I haven’t really got going since, but there’s no player in the world who doesn’t go through a spell where they’re struggling," said Brown after coming through Final Qualifying. "I haven’t been playing badly – I’ve just been impatient and I had to be patient here. A lot of putts shaved the hole and I feel like I deserved that last one.”

His best 2024 finish was a tie for fourth in March’s SDC Championship in South Africa.
