Lowry leads the way as Grillo’s feeling ace

The wait for The 148th Open to arrive is finally over and the opening morning of action didn’t disappoint.

Portrush resident Darren Clarke got proceedings underway by belting the opening tee shot down the fairway en route to a first-hole birdie before Irishman Shane Lowry set the early pace as he made five birdies and one bogey for a score of 67 and the clubhouse lead.

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo recorded the first hole-in-one at The Open since Louis Oosthuizen’s ace in 2016, while Rory McIlroy suffered a nightmare first hole before battling back.

Connor Syme holed a fairway wedge, as the likes of Brandon Wu, Beef Johnston and Robert MacIntyre all sunk monster putts and you can catch up with all the highlights from a scintillating morning of play in our video above.
