Three dynamic duels - three memorable Championships

Next up in our Decade of The Open series, we reflect on the head-to-heads that have inspired golf fans across the world in the last ten years.

Stenson’s battle with Mickelson over the Ayrshire links will go down as one of the most historic head-to-heads in the history of The Open.

The 40-year-old, who also became the first Swede to lift the Claret Jug, started the final day one shot ahead of Phil Mickelson and carded an eight-under-par 63, featuring ten birdies, to claim a three-shot victory over the 2013 Champion Golfer of the Year on a 20-under-par 264.

“I feel very privileged to be the one to hold this trophy” Henrik Stenson, 2016 Champion Golfer
Ernie Els never led the 141st Open until the moment he won it. At a course where the South African felt he had let victories slip away in both 1996 and 2001, he closed superbly with a 68 that included an inward half of only 32 strokes.
“Amazing, I’m still numb. It’s just crazy. I really feel for my good buddy, Scottie.” Ernie els, 2012 champion golfer
Jordan Spieth showed remarkable resilience and skill to bounce back from a poor start to his final round in The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale and secure a victory which ensured he joined the pantheon of Champion Golfers of the Year.
