His Open Championship debut will come a week before his 25th birthday and two months after his maiden PGA Tour victory at the Valspar Championship, where a second-round 63 helped him to a three-stroke win and a climb from 94th to 44th on the world rankings.

Burns followed that up with a runner-up finish at the AT&T Byron Nelson just before the top 50 earned exemptions for Royal St George’s.

He played golf at Louisiana State University and in 2017 won the Jack Nicklaus award as the top college player in America. Burns qualified for the Tour’s Barbasol Championship that season and on the day he turned 21 finished a superb joint-sixth, having followed an opening 68 with three 66s.

He turned professional later the same year and was a winner on the Web.com Tour in 2018. On stepping back up to the main circuit he tied for third at the Sanderson Farms Championship in October that year and this February missed out on a play-off at the Genesis Invitational by one shot.

Burns led by five at halfway there after matching the tournament record with his 64-66 start. He had to wait only five more events, however, to get his hands on a trophy.
