Joint winner with Martin Rohwer of the 36-hole Final Qualifying event at Royal Cinque Ports in Kent on July 4, both producing rounds of 72 and 69 to finish one ahead of Branden Grace, Charl Schwartzel and Antoine Rozner.

Detry teamed up with Thomas Pieters to give Belgium their first-ever victory at golf’s World Cup in 2018 and that came two years after an astonishing victory on the European Challenge Tour. With rounds of 60, 67, 69 and 63 he won the Bridgestone Challenge by 12 strokes on 29-under-par to underline the talent he had shown as an amateur.

He represented Europe in the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup – Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas were on the United States side - Belgium in three world team championships and Europe again in the 2014 and 2015 Arnold Palmer Cup matches against America’s best college players.

In both of those Detry partnered Jon Rahm. Those appearances came while he studied at the University of Illinois – the same as Pieters before him – and he reached fifth on the amateur world rankings.

He just missed out on a maiden European Tour win two years ago, losing a play-off to Min Woo Lee at the Scottish Open. But three places at Royal St George's were on offer and he joined Lee and Jack Senior for what was his Championship debut.
