Thomas Detry tied fourth in last year’s PGA Championship, but two months later failed to emerge through The Open Final Qualifying at Royal Cinque Ports.

Is back now, though, for Royal Portrush as a member of the world’s top 50 after a stunning seven-stroke victory at February’s WM Phoenix Open – his first title after 67 starts on the PGA Tour and 161 on the DP World Tour.

Among those starts were seven second place finishes, but he put those near-misses behind him with a superb 24 under par display for his biggest win since he teamed up with Thomas Pieters to give Belgium their first-ever victory at golf’s World Cup in 2018. That came two years after an astonishing 12-stroke, 29 under success on the European Challenge Tour.

Represented Europe in the 2010 Junior Ryder Cup (Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas were on the United States side), Belgium in three world amateur team championships and Europe again in the 2014 and 2015 Arnold Palmer Cup matches against America’s best college players. In both of those he partnered Jon Rahm.

Just missed out on a maiden European Tour win when he lost a play-off to Min Woo Lee at the 2021 Scottish Open.
