tom lehman wins the open at royal lythm & St annes

Winner at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1996. A third round 64 swept Lehman six strokes clear with what remains a record 54-hole total of 198 and even with a closing 73 he won by two from Ernie Els and Mark McCumber.

The victory came a month after he finished runner-up to Steve Jones in the US Open and he went on to become America's leading money-winner that season after a six-stroke victory in the Tour Championship.

The following April he was the proud holder of the world No 1 spot, albeit for only one week.

Managed 10 top six finishes in the majors, including a fourth place finish at St Andrews in 2000, and earned three Ryder Cup caps before becoming captain at The K Club in 2006.

Since then he has served as an assistant to Corey Pavin at Celtic Manor in 2010 and to Davis Love in 2016 in his native Minnesota.

During his reign as Open champion he won the World Invitational at Loch Lomond and since turning 50 he was won three senior majors and 11 tournaments in all, topping the Champions Tour money list in 2011.
