The Open is the special one
2011 Champion Golfer of the Year Darren Clarke reckons The Open is ‘more special’ than any of golf’s other majors
Darren Clarke has hailed The Open as “more special” than any of the other golf majors.
The 2011 Champion Golfer of the Year reckons the oldest championship is still the sport’s greatest testing ground.
Clarke said: “The Open is the biggest and the best - it’s the ultimate golf tournament and the absolute pinnacle of our sport.
“It’s just more special. All the major championships are wonderful , don’t get me wrong , but the Claret Jug is the one that we strive for and covet the most.
“Any time you get an opportunity to come and play in the biggest and best golf tournament in the world is always something that, for me, now that I’m exempt, I look forward to at the start of ever year.
“I’m very fortunate and privileged to have my name on that Claret Jug. It’ll always be there. I worked my whole life and whole career to get to that point.”
Clarke will take the field at Royal Birkdale when this year’s Open gets underway on 16th July.
The Northern Irishman added: “I’ve always loved Birkdale - it’s a wonderful golf course and very, very fair.
“It’s tough, demanding and challenging but a sensational golf course.”
