Born in Canada, but he was under a month old when his family moved to the United States. As an amateur he came through two stages of qualifying to play in the 2007 U.S. Open, but his Open Championship debut did not come until Carnoustie in 2018 after he finished joint third in A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, part of The Open Qualifying Series.

In 2013 he recorded a hole-in-one on the 409-yard par-4 fifth hole at the McGladrey Classic pro-am.

After three runner-up finishes on the PGA Tour, all by a single stroke, he captured the 2020 CJ Cup at Shadow Creek, where a closing 64 took him two ahead of Xander Schauffele on his 233rd start on the circuit. He then moved to a career-high 22nd in the world by overcoming Jordan Spieth in the Charles Schwab Challenge and in November added the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open with a closing 65, finishing two ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Kevin Tway.

Previously he had been pipped by Jonas Blixt in the 2012 Frys.com Open, Bubba Watson at the 2016 Northern Trust and Paul Casey in the 2019 Valspar Championship. He was also twice a winner on the Web.com Tour in 2011, each of the victories containing a round of 63.

Earned his place at St Andrews for being among the 30 qualifiers – for the ninth consecutive season - for the PGA Tour’s season-ending Tour Championship.
