Meet the nine amateurs aiming to follow illustrious footsteps at Royal Portrush

From Tiger Woods to Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose to Jose Maria Olazabal, the roll call of Silver Medal winners at The Open is an illustrious one.

The prize for the leading amateur, won last year at Royal Troon by Calum Scott, will be hotly contested at Royal Portrush with nine hopefuls in the field.

Which of the following will add their names to a glittering roll call?

Cameron Adam

Robert MacIntyre will not be the only left-handed Scot in the field this week, with Cameron Adam securing his spot through winning The Open Amateur Series - awarded to the player who does best across the St Andrews Links Trophy, The Amateur Championship and European Amateur.

He is a member of Royal Burgess, the oldest golf club in the world, and is making his major championship debut at Royal Portrush.

Sebastian Cave

Talented teenager Cave is – like Frazer Jones, also in the Silver Medal hunt – part of the University of North Carolina, arriving back in the UK fresh from setting a Charlotte Men's Golf single season stroke average record of 70.67.

The 21-year-old from Melbourne – in Derbyshire, not Australia – journals every night and plans to have a full notebook by the end of the week. He hit his first-ever hole-in-one at the age of seven.

Ethan Fang

Became just the second American winner of The Amateur Championship since 1979 when he defeated Gavin Tiernan in the final at Royal St George’s on his first-ever trip to Europe.

Ranked the fourth best amateur in the world, the 20-year-old is attached to Oklahoma State University.

Connor Graham

The teenager was victorious in a Final Qualifying play-off at Dundonald to seal his spot and continue a fine spell of form.

He has been a standout player for Texas Tech on the College circuit and topped The Amateur Championship strokeplay standings for the second consecutive year.

An ambassador for the Paul Lawrie Foundation, he battled through FQ sporting a shirt bearing the image of the Champion Golfer of 1999.

Justin Hastings

The Cayman Islands’ sole representative in the field secured his spot by winning the Latin America Amateur Championship – a competition he first made the cut in aged 14.

Hastings won the low amateur prize at the US Open earlier this year and now looks to do likewise here.

Filip Jakubcik

The first-ever Czech player to feature at The Open warmed up in style with a hole-in-one at the 6th during a practice round on Tuesday.

He won the European Amateur Championship to punch his Royal Portrush ticket and will set off alongside Thorbjorn Olesen and Matthew Jordan at 8:36am on Thursday.

Frazer Jones

Jones, who plays at Kirby Muxloe in Leicestershire and has just finished his second year at UNC Charlotte in the USA, turned 20 four days before the opening day of The 153rd Open.

He sealed his spot with a stunning back nine during Final Qualifying at Burnham & Berrow, with four birdies in succession down the stretch in his second round of the day.

Jones has represented Leicestershire and England and will have his dad on the bag at Portrush, just as he was during qualifying.

Bryan Newman

The youngest player in this list, the 17-year-old South African won the Africa Amateur in his homeland earlier this year.

Runner-up in the 2023 Scottish boys championship at Lundin – and winner of the Under-16 trophy that week – he was taught the game by his father Andrew and started competing in SA Kids tournaments when he was seven.

Richard Teder

The Estonian became the first player from a Baltic nation to qualify for The Open when he holed in for eagle from the fairway during a Final Qualifying play-off at West Lancashire.

“I’m excited. It’s an honour being the first Estonian to be here and play golf in front of all these people and compete with the best in the world,” he told Live At The Range this week.

He has three wins on the amateur circuit in the last year.
