Champions who won a second major in the same year

Xander Schauffele poses with the Claret Jug after winning The Open at Royal Troon in 2024

Xander Schauffele became just the 16th golfer to win The Open and a second major title in the same calendar year.

The American broke his major duck by claiming the PGA Championship in May 2024.

He followed this up by winning his first Claret Jug courtesy of an exquisite bogey-free six-under-par final round at Royal Troon.

Walter Hagen became the first person to achieve the feat back in 1924, lifting the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool in the same year he secured the PGA Championship title at French Lick Springs Golf Club in Indiana.

Since then, the list of players to have managed it reads like a who’s who of golfing greats.

Bobby Jones twice did the Open/US Open double, while Ben Hogan won The Open, US Open and Masters in 1953.

Gary Player was the first non-American to achieve the feat when he won The Open and the Masters in 1974, while Tiger Woods has won The Open and another major in the same year on three occasions, in 2000 (when he won three majors), 2005 and 2006.

Rory McIlroy, who did so in 2014 when he won The Open at Royal Liverpool before adding the PGA Championship just three weeks later at Valhalla. And Schauffele is the latest golfer to join the pantheon of major greats.
