Jack Buchanan earns Open debut after Africa Amateur Championship win

Jack Buchanan poses with an Open pin flag after winning the Africa Amateur Championship at Royal Johannesburg.

Jack Buchanan qualified for The 154th Open thanks to a commanding victory at the 2026 Africa Amateur Championship.

The 21-year-old South African won by six shots after a sparkling performance across four days at Royal Johannesburg's East Course.

He recorded a 21-under-par total of 267 to get his hands on the trophy and earn a series of life-changing opportunities, including a berth at Royal Birkdale – a venue he has previously been to as a spectator.

After his triumph, he said: "I believe my first Open that I went to was Royal Birkdale [in 2017]. So to go back somewhere where I was a kid watching not too long ago, what feels like not too long ago but actually ten years ago, it's going to be really special."

"Kevin Na gave me a golf ball that he just got a hole-in-one with in a practice round. Rickie Fowler gave me a signed glove. It's going to be unbelievable to tee it up with these type of names in a few months' time," he added.

Fans looking to attend The 154th Open this summer, and watch Jack Buchanan competing with the world's greatest golfers for the coveted Claret Jug, can guarantee their place with Hospitality Experiences, Ticket Plus and Destination Packages still available.

Buchanan's win follows Argentine Mateo Pulcini earning his own spot at The Open courtesy of an historic victory at the 2026 Latin America Amateur Championship.

The 25-year-old won the Championship, which took place at Lima Golf Club in Peru, in extra holes after a fascinating duel with Venezuela’s Virgilio Paz Valdes.
