Long’s Open Championship debut comes at the age of 33 and after he was originally the 11th reserve.
He learned of his place in the field on the Sunday before the Championship after Ryan Moore opted not to take up the exemption he gained at the John Deere Classic.
Long had a wonderful start to his PGA Tour career in 2019. After making the halfway cut in only one of his first four tournaments he won the Desert Classic, recording two rounds of 63 and then a closing 65 to beat Phil Mickelson and Adam Hadwin by one.
He jumped instantly from 417th on the world rankings to 133rd, but it was only when he finished runner-up to Michael Thompson at the 3M Classic last July that he made it into the top 100. On that occasion he finished 63-64 after standing 10 strokes behind the leaders at halfway.
In his last start of 2020 Long tied for third in the Mayakoba Classic, three behind Viktor Hovland.
He is yet to have a top-10 finish so far this year, but had enough points in the bag to retain his position in the game’s leading 100 and that led to his late call-up.
