Picked up the biggest cheque of his European Tour career in January when second place behind Shane Lowry at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship earned him more than £600,000.

It also took him from 281st on the world rankings to 135th and has in addition brought him a return to The Open off the Tour’s “Race to Dubai” list. He was among the game’s top 30 over a decade ago, winning three times in his native South Africa that year – two of them in successive weeks - following victories at the 2004 Madrid Open and 2007 Wales Open.

Then came lengthy spells out with injury before he added the 2013 Joburg Open by an impressive seven strokes from compatriot Charl Schwartzel. With two second places and three other top 10 finishes he posted a career-best eighth place on the money list that season, but further back problems limited him to just five events on the circuit in 2015 and was given a medical exemption to enable him to continue. Three more runner-up finishes, making seven in all, have come since then to go along with his six titles.
